Nepal > Trekking > Everest Area Trekking

With eight of the worlds highest peaks, Nepal is loaded with spectacular mountains vistas. The name “Everest” is a magic in itself. EVEREST (8848m.) is called “SAGARMATHA” in Nepali-“Higher than the sky” and “CHHOMOLUNGMA” in Tibetan-“Mother Goddess of the Earth”. The quickest and easiest way to reach this region is by flight to Lukla at 2827m. The Solu-Khumbu region has sweeping glaciers, magnificent mountains, forests, animals, birds, monasteries and is the home of the world famous Sherpa people. The flora and fauna are other ornaments of the Sagarmatha national park, but the existence of the Yeti remains mysterious. Trek to Everest base camp and Gokyo is one of the most popular courses in the Nepal Himalaya, commanding the exciting views of Lhotse (8,516m) and Nuptse (7,855m,) not to mention the world's highest peak Mt. Everest 8,848m, which is also called Sagarmatha or Chomolangma.

Starting from Lukla, this course goes through Namche Bazar and visits the gompa in Tengboche. Namche Bazar is known for its open-air bazar and as the home town of Sherpas. The gompa in Tengboche is the head monastery of Tibetan Buddhism. You will also see another gompa in Pangboche, which is a town further interior, and will observe the religious life of the mountain people. From Lobuche on, yo will be trekking in the glacier area and, and after visiting the belvedere in Kala Pattar, you will finally reach Mt. Everest Base Camp in the remotest point of the Khumbu Glacier.

Since you will be trekking in places of high altitude, the risk of getting altitude sickness is very high. The elderly and those who have high blood pressure are advised to be especially cautious. Also, since the flights to Lukla may get cancelled when the weather is bad, it is wise to set your schedule with a little leeway both ways.

Everest Base Camp/ Kalapathar (5545m.) Trek grading:
Difficult The Everest Base Camp trekking course is most representative of the Nepal Himalaya; it follows the main route through the Khumbu region from the Sherpa town of Namche Bazar, allowing the trekker to view close at hand some of the world’s highest and most famous peaks from Everest on down. The course is varied-you encounter Lamas and see Gompas (monasteries), Chorten (Stupas), and Mani stone (Pryer walls).

Everest Trek From Tibet Site-KANGSHUNG FACE MOUNT EVEREST BASE CAMP The Kangshung face of Mt. Everest (8848m) is a must see for all Everest crazy trekkers. The Base Camp saw several failed attempts to conquer the magical peak before it was finally done using the North Col and has become a frequented point since.

A flight to Gongkar Airport starts this trek followed by a drive to Lhasa along the highest river in the world, known as Yalung Tsangpo (Brahamaputra). An enjoyable two days will be spent in Lhasa admiring historical places such as the Potala and Norbulingka Palaces, Jokhang temple, Barkhor Bazaar and the monasteries of Drepung and Sera. The next few days will be spent driving to Kharta via Gyantse, Shigatse and Shegar. The actual walking begins from Kharta, where Yaks can be organized if required. Apart from the few arid ridges of the Dzakar Chu Valley, this region is fairly green due to rainfall received from Nepal's monsoon. Forests of scrub, juniper, dwarf rhododendron, and birch cover the higher ridges, and dense thickets of willows edge the creeks in the lower valleys. The most frequented route used by climbing expedition teams to reach the Kangshung face Base Camp takes 4 to 5 days over Langma La Pass at 5240m. This spectacular pass, if weather permits, reveals some of the grandest Himalayan scenery found in the entire range. A longer alternative trek to the Base Camp passes over the Shao La Pass (4790m), a lower pass to the southeast of Langma La that approaches the Base Camp via the Karma Tsangpo Valley. Once you have reached the Base Camp and the exhilaration of doing so has died down you will make your way back to Kharta. From Kharta you will end the trek by driving back to Kathmandu via Nyalam and Zhangmu.
