The Kanchanjunga was forbidden to the trekkers before the door to this region was opened in 1988.Thios mountain is situated on the border of Nepal & Sikkim, the state of India. So, politically it is not possible to take a circuit of this mountain. It is suggested to visit the North & South side of the mountain from Nepal side but should be equipped for a high crossing & requires enough time i.e. 3 to 4 weeks. A special Trekking permit is required to trek in this region.
Day 01: Kathmandu to Tumlingtar:
Fly to Tumlingtar from Kathmandu & rest for preparation of trekking.
Day 02: Tumlingtar to Mayam:
The trek starts early in the morning towards Chainpur & stops at Cahinpur for the lunch. After lunch, the trail descends towards Pokhari, and then starts to climb again up to Mayam & rest overnight.
Day 03: Mayam to Sangu:
On this day the trek descends to Sangu via crossing a ridge at Nundhaki.
Day 04: Sangu to Tamor River:
The trail follows towards Majhuwa Khola (river) & after crossing it reaches to Dovan near Tamor River & heads ahead & camps on the bank of the river.
Day 05: Tamor River to Chiruwa:
The trek goes ahead, sometimes climbing steeply up & down again towards riverbank. Finally the trail enters it the valley & the campsite will be near the Chiruwa village.
Day 06: Chiruwa to Shakathum:
The trail continues up & passes the village Tapethok, then climbs up for a while & again descends to Simbuwa Khola. After crossing this river the trek climbs over a ridge to join the steep & narrow Ghunsa Khola valley. The camping will be by the bank of the river at Shankathum.
Day 07: Shankathum to Amjilassa:
The trail follows a steep & narrow trail up the river along the right bank of the Ghunsa Khola. The trail then becomes very steep while passing to villages of Zongling & Ghayabari.It is a difficult climb with several outer cropping. The path descends steeply & arrives at Amjilassa for camping.
Day 08: Amjilassa to Kyapra village:
The trek continues along a gentle path towards Ghunsa Khola. The pinding trail descends to the overhead, which follows for a while before climbing up a trail to reach to Kyapra village (9090 ft) for overnight camping.
Day 09: Kyapra village to Ghunsa village :( 11400 ft)
The trail descends from Kyapra & makes a n easy climb up the Right Bank of Ghunsa Khola & enters into the valley & leaves the river & climbs a small hill. After the village of Phere the trail enters the rhododendron forest & climbs a hill then descends to Ghunsa Khola & crosses it to reach Ghunsa village for camping.
Day 10: Ghunsa village to Khambachen:
The trail descends towards the riverbed entering a forested area. Janna Glacier lies ahead. Then , climb a steep hill to a rocky area where it traverses along the mountainside & finally gets a view of the Jannu (25289 ft) also called ?The Mystery Peak? or ?The Terror?. It descends again to Khambachen for rest.
Day 11: Khambanchen to Lhonak (15680 ft)
The trek goes ahead to the edge of Kanchanjunga Glacier & crosses the lateral moraine, then comes to the junction of Lhonak Glacier & cuts across at this junction & arrives at Lhonak for camping. The view of Morra Peak (20808 ft) comes into sight from here.
Day 12: Lhonak to Pangpema:
It is a day trip to Pangpema (6900 ft). The fine views of the towering peaks of the Tent Peak (24167 ft).Cross Peak (21353 ft) & the My.Kanchanjunga are the rewarding sights of the trail. Then, it returns to the Khambanchen.
Day 13: Pangpema to Khambanchen:
Take a morning hike up ridge north of Pangpema.A climb of 200 to 300 meters provides a vantage point with views of Khanchanjunga. Wedge peak, the Twins, & Tent peak. The descent goes faster so you can easily get back to Khambanchen in a single day.
Day 14: Khambanchen to Ghunsa:
The high route to the south Kanchanjunga base camp via the Lapsang La begins here.
Day 15: Acclimatization day at Ghunsa:
The trek is now getting into high country you need to spend sometime to allow your body to acclimatize to hog altitude.
Day 16: Ghunsa to Amjilassa:
Day 17: Amjilassa to Chiruwa:
Descends to Helok & heads for south side of Kanchanjunga. Start climbing the stone stairs in Helok to the ridge. The trail goes up the Simbuwa Khola towards Tseram (12190 ft) for overnight camp.
Day 18: Tseram to Yamphudin:
The trails descends through the rhododendron forest to Trenton at 9800 ft, then climb again to cross Dubi Bhanjyang at 7850 ft. & descends to Yamphudin (5360 ft) the first village after Ghunsa: inhabited by the mixed community of Sherpa, Limbu, Rai, & Gurung.
Day 19: Yamphudin to Ponphe:
On this day. The trail descends to Kabell Khola & ascends to Mamanka village at 5630 ft. Then the route again descends to cross a bridge over a stream at 4740 ft. & again climb steeply to reach to Ponphe village at 5500 ft high.
Day 20: Ponphe to Pha Khola (4350 ft)
The trail climbs to the ridge at 5750 ft. Then begins to descend through side valleys & passes Phun-Phun village to Keswa (6120 ft) then continues to ascend to cross a Gurung settlement of Bhanjyang at 6640 ft. & traverse a ridge to descend to Khunjari (5250 ft.) a Limbu near Pha Khola for overnight
rest.
Day 21: Pha Khola to Taplejung (7450 ft)
The trail makes a steep climb through Shimu village to Thembewa (5830 ft) & continues to climb to Lalai Kharka (6960 ft). Then crossing a pass at 8100 ft. the trail descends towards Taplejung Airport for overnight rest.
Day 22: Fly back to Kathmandu:
